AI in Microsoft ERP · Cowork D365 Plugins · Series 4 · #037
When Cowork went GA on June 16, it didn’t arrive alone — plugins for D365 Sales, Customer Service, and ERP apps reached GA at the same time. This is the most direct bridge yet between Microsoft’s new agentic productivity layer and your actual D365 transactional data.
I flagged this briefly in Post 34, but it deserves its own dedicated treatment because it’s the development in this entire Build cycle that most directly answers the question D365 finance and operations leaders actually have: “does any of this connect to my ERP?” The answer, as of June 2026, is genuinely yes — and I want to walk through exactly what that connection looks like and what it doesn’t do yet.

What the D365 Plugins Actually Provide
Microsoft’s own characterization of these plugins, from CVP Deva Rajamohan: they provide “a quality-validated set of prompts that run on out-of-the-box Dynamics 365 data.” That phrasing is worth parsing carefully, because it tells you the maturity level of what you’re getting. This is not Cowork independently reasoning about your ERP data from scratch — it’s a curated, tested set of prompt patterns that Microsoft has built and validated against standard D365 data structures, exposed through Cowork’s plugin interface.
In practice, this means more reliable, more predictable behavior than an open-ended agent improvising against your data — at the cost of being somewhat more bounded in what it can do compared to a fully custom-built agent (the Copilot Studio approach from Post 11). For most organizations, that trade-off is the right one for a first foray into agent-assisted ERP work: validated, bounded behavior is exactly what you want before trusting an agent with broader latitude.
What’s Covered at GA — And What Isn’t Yet
- 💼Dynamics 365 Sales – GA
- The most mature of the three plugins, reflecting Microsoft’s earlier and deeper investment in CRM-focused AI. Cowork can pull together account research, draft outreach informed by CRM history, and assemble multi-source briefing materials for sales conversations – extending the meeting summarization and opportunity scoring capabilities already GA within D365 Sales itself.
- 🎧Dynamics 365 Customer Service – GA
- Cowork can assemble case research, pull customer history, and draft structured responses or escalation summaries grounded in D365 Customer Service data – complementing the agentic case management and quality evaluation capabilities already part of the Customer Service Copilot roadmap.
- 🏦Dynamics 365 ERP Apps – GA (broadly described)
- Microsoft’s announcement language groups “ERP apps” together without the same level of module-by-module specificity given to Sales and Customer Service. Based on available detail, this connects to finance and operations data through the same MCP server foundation, but the documentation is still maturing, and the specific bounded use cases (what exact tasks the validated prompts cover) are less publicly detailed than the CE-side plugins as of this writing.
- 📊Microsoft Fabric – GA
- A Fabric plugin is also GA alongside the D365 plugins, meaning Cowork tasks can draw on your Fabric-connected analytics data, including Business Performance Analytics models if your organization has them configured. This is the most direct connection between Cowork and the financial analytics infrastructure.

A Realistic First Pilot
If your organization runs D365 Sales or Customer Service alongside Finance and Operations, I’d recommend starting your Cowork-D365 pilot on the CE side first — it’s the more mature, better-documented plugin set, and it gives your team a chance to build comfort with the Cowork experience, its cost model (Post 34), and its governance implications before extending into finance-connected workflows.
Once your team is comfortable, a reasonable finance-side pilot task using the Fabric plugin: assign Cowork a multi-step task like “pull this month’s variance data from our BPA model, draft a first-pass commentary explaining the largest variances, and format it as a one-page summary.” Compare the output quality and time savings against the manual process covered in Post 5 (period close) and Post 27 (accruals).

The D365 plugins for Cowork are a genuine bridge between Microsoft’s new agentic productivity layer and your ERP data — more mature on the CE side, still maturing on the ERP side, but moving fast. The right approach for most organizations is a careful, well-scoped pilot building on whatever data foundation work you’ve already done.
