Honest, practical help for navigating Dynamics 365 — without the headache

Ever stood on a warehouse floor and watched someone walk what feels like half a mile to pick three items for one order? Or waited on a fulfillment number that came in low, again, because the system said the stock was in bin A-12 and it very much was not? Multiply that by every picker, every shift, every day, and you start to see why warehouse inefficiency is a lot more expensive than it looks on paper.

In the last post, Supply Planning You Can Actually Trust, we talked about making sure the plan holds up once it’s made. This time we’re moving downstream, to the warehouse floor itself, where Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (D365 SCM, Microsoft’s cloud enterprise resource planning system, or ERP, for finance and operations) is rolling out three 2026 release wave 1 investments aimed at making picking, putaway, and scanning genuinely smarter.

🧭 Smarter routes, less walking

Here’s something that surprised me the first time I dug into it: a lot of warehouse systems don’t actually calculate the shortest walking path for a pick. They just work off aisle or location sequence. Spatial location intelligence changes that. It lets you assign real spatial coordinates to your locations and zones, then optimize picking routes after a wave is released for picking, using either a straight-line or a “city-block” distance model (think: can a picker cut diagonally, or do they have to follow the aisles like city streets?). The system then sorts the route using an algorithm built for exactly this kind of problem: finding the shortest path that hits every stop.

You don’t need to understand the math to appreciate the outcome: less time walking, more time picking. This capability is expected to be generally available June 5, 2026.

📦 Put the right stock in the right place

Route optimization only helps if the inventory is where it’s supposed to be. That’s what dynamic item placement is for. It lets you define preferred storage locations and target quantities per item, either by hand or by import, and then intelligently balances inventory as it arrives through purchase and transfer orders, automatically creating the putaway work to get it there. Paired with spatial locations, the goal is real-time space utilization that keeps fast-moving items close and picking routes short, instead of stock landing wherever there’s an open slot that day. It’s targeted for general availability in June 2026.

⌚ Scanning without slowing down

The third piece is the most tangible one: what’s actually on a picker’s wrist. The Warehouse Management mobile app now runs natively on wrist-mounted scanning devices, so workers scan barcodes without juggling a separate handheld. Real-time audio and vibration feedback (“OK” or “reject”) replaces having to stop and check a screen. Microsoft says this saves 3 to 5 seconds per scan, and some organizations have seen picking accuracy improve by up to 27% after switching. Multiply a few seconds across thousands of daily scans, and it adds up fast. It’s in public preview now (since March 30, 2026) with general availability expected in June 2026.

💰 Why this matters to finance, not just ops

You might not be the one walking the warehouse floor, so it’s easy to assume this doesn’t touch your world. It does. Warehouse efficiency shows up in your numbers whether you’re watching for it or not. Faster picking means more orders shipped per labor hour, a cost-per-order number your controller’s office already tracks. Fewer mispicks means fewer returns and expedited replacement shipments. And accurate inventory placement means fewer surprise write-offs when a cycle count turns up stock that was never where the system said it was. None of these features touch a general ledger account directly. But every one touches the fulfillment costs and inventory accuracy that eventually do.
