Every agent Microsoft announced at Build needs to understand your business to be useful. Microsoft IQ is the new umbrella term for the infrastructure that makes that possible — and it directly touches how D365 data gets used by AI going forward.
The Four Components of Microsoft IQ
💼 Work IQ
Gives agents a semantic understanding of activity across your business — what’s happening in your CRM, your ERP, and your communication tools. This is the layer Scout uses to understand how you work. For D365, this is the explicit bridge connecting ERP transactional data to the broader agent ecosystem.
📊 Fabric IQ
Provides shared business semantics so agents understand the relationships between your customers, deals, orders, and operational data – built on the Microsoft Fabric platform. This is where the BPA dimensional models and OneLake data architecture plug into the agent context layer.
📚 Foundry IQ
Connects enterprise knowledge and live web data so agents can ground decisions in both your actual business context and current external information — combining internal documents and data with external research capability.
🌐 Web IQ
The newly introduced component, extending agent reach to the live web at roughly 2.5x the retrieval speed of prior methods – meaning agents are never working from stale information when external context matters.
The Work IQ APIs: What Shipped June 16
The most concrete, immediately relevant piece of this announcement for technical teams is the Work IQ APIs, which reached general availability on June 16, 2026. These APIs collapse what would otherwise require hundreds of data-specific integration tools into just 10 APIs — running at roughly twice the speed of traditional alternatives while consuming about 80% fewer tokens.
For organizations building custom agents (via Copilot Studio, as covered in Post 11), this matters directly: agent development against Microsoft’s data ecosystem just got significantly simpler and cheaper. Fewer integration points to build and maintain, faster response times, and lower token costs for every agent interaction that touches Microsoft 365 or connected ERP data. Agent actions remain within the Microsoft 365 tenant boundary and are auditable through Purview — which connects to the governance themes we’ve covered throughout this series.
“Fragmented records, inconsistent pipeline stages, and incomplete contact data limit what agents can learn and what they can do.” That’s not a hypothetical warning — it’s Microsoft’s own explicit statement about Microsoft IQ. Data quality isn’t a nice-to-have anymore; it’s the direct determinant of whether any of this infrastructure delivers value.”
What This Means for D365 Data Specifically
The explicit statement from Microsoft’s own Build materials is worth quoting directly: Work IQ “gives agents a semantic understanding of activity across your business, including what is happening in your CRM, your ERP, and your communication tools.” That’s Microsoft stating plainly that D365 data is meant to be part of this unified context layer.
Practically, this reinforces everything we’ve covered about data foundations throughout this series: the BPA dimensional models (refer back to Post 13), the MCP server connections (refer back to Post 14), clean master data and consistent chart of accounts usage — all of this becomes more valuable, not less, as Microsoft builds a broader context layer on top of it. Organizations with clean D365 data are positioned to get more value from Fabric IQ and Work IQ as these capabilities mature and connect more directly to ERP workflows.
The compounding data quality argument: Every series in this collection has made some version of the “clean data matters” argument for a specific AI feature. Microsoft IQ generalizes that argument across the entire agent ecosystem — your D365 data quality now affects not just your in-system Copilot experience, but potentially every agent across your Microsoft stack that draws on Work IQ for context. This raises the stakes on data governance work that might have previously felt like a “nice to have eventually” project.

For D365 organizations, the practical takeaway is the same one we’ve returned to throughout this entire series: clean, well-structured data is the foundation everything else builds on, and that foundation just became more strategically important.
